Summertime Creating and Giving New Life to Things of the Past

This Summer I have focused my creative tendencies toward my collections of vintage pieces. From brooches to earrings, I have held them in my hands and stroked them into ideas for new repurposed designs that are worthy of today and any day.

The fun to combine items and embellish them to be interesting and sometimes a bit funky has been a ball. Some have sold and others are available at http://www.diannearnettedesigns.etsy.com/, where my collection lives until someone purchases it either online or from me directly.

The piece to the left is a drop dead, jaw-dropper! It is going to make itself important.............and you importantly accessorized...
It is great on a tee....or on a gown. Anyway you like it, it likes you.

As you can see, it has multi-layers of stones and chains and many outstanding elements........just fun and it was so much fun to construct.

The next piece is a bit more subdued....It is more demure and is pearls and enameled pieces to make a more symetrical design. You will see that I like it alone or layered with pieces that you probably have in your jewelry collection. Very pretty, and feminine...

The blue colors are clean and classic. The white makes it a natural to use with business suits to little black dresses.......

Wear it alone or in layers as you see to the right in the next photo.

The other two designs are examples of pretty vintage items that were just too pretty to discard. They are no longer worn as they were orginally....but now they are enjoying new life. Take a look on my etsy site and see what you think. They love company!

Lirking crafts you say......yes! Lirking...The kids will be going to camp and doing all kinds of crafts that are going to be great fun.........Remember in Girl Scots when you made an OIL CLOTH PILLOW to sit on so you wouldn't get dirty around the campfire.

Mine did not look that this one at Cherry Hill Cottage http://cherryhillcottage.typepad.com/cherryhill_cottage/2008/04/cottage-oilclot.html, but I thought it was great...Our troop made them from Kelly Green solid oil cloth and we stiched around them with yellow yarn...I'll never forget that Summer when my Mom was our troop leader. That was a lot of fun.

Other Crafts lirking will be those from the camps all around the country...your child may come home with something like this...although maybe more crudely made. And if you are going to the beach..........think of all of the shells that you and the kids may want to pick up for making shell, beachy stuff later. My kids and I made all kinds of neat things after visits to Padre Island and other beaches......We made shell frames...just glued the shells on...after soaking them in bleach to get the stinky smell out and all kinds of jewelry.........I came across these site on Etsy for shells and other neat things that may give you some great crafting ideas. www.thesaltyseahouse.etsy.com has these and other wonderful treasures for you to purchase if a trip to the beach is too distant on your Summer Calendar.And don't forget about all the wonderful things you can do with Rocks. You can pick up rocks anywhere.........you don't even need a Vacation! I have loved rock projects with my kids....Paper Weights, Door Stops, Scuptures, Mosaics and lots of other things that you can let your imagination fly with....and...I found these wonderfully colored and shaped crayons for kids that you may love...www.AugustGrove.etsy.com has them and lots of other great things too.

The only problem that I see with these crayons...they look good enough to eat!

Weird is the Topic of TODAY...TOAY'S creatively WEIRD!

Today just felt "weird" to me, so I decided to support my feelings with some really cute and creative weirdness from my fellow artisans on Etsy, the famous handmade website that helps us all "get discovered". The idea of weirdness is, well, weird but also weirdly creative....In fact, we artists are used to being referred to as delightfully weird, or original...we like that! Of course, being weird can be wonderful! And speaking of wonderfully weird...see what is next. I seem to be attracted to eyes and heads today in this blog on weird so take a look at what HappyFunShop.etsy.com has created and how it is just too cute and wierd for words.The other thought that I have as I blog and share today is how great the photography is for all of these items.........The photos make us really notice how wonderfully weird these all are.

Note: I is not that I actually think any of these are "wierd"....it is just that "wierd" was one of the tags used in each of these listings........so I guess that "wierd" like "beauty" is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Now for PINK! Pink can be reddish, orangish, bluish, .........purpleish.......well you decide.

You can mix pinks and reds and blues and turquois and they just all work together. You can dress a girl, a baby, a man, a woman in pink and they all look good..........It may be a jewel, or a tutu, a tie or a purse......Pink looks, well Pink! and Pretty.

Pink mixes with checks and just about any pattern that can be imagined.Dogs wear pink.............mine does! And she just loves it!

I love pink in anyway it is used.........I often like pink in my own designs, but this blog is about other people's pink today...

Arts and Craft Shows....Good, Bad, Beautiful, and Ugly!

Since I began selling the jewelry and accessory items that I design, I have found that one way of promoting my jewelry business is by participating in art and craft shows in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. This has been both rewarding and frustrating at times. At my first show I had no idea of what to expect. Would they like my things? Would they be priced too high or too low? Would there be a lot of people there? Did I have enough inventory to show? Maybe I would sell everything and then have to start over!

Now, with 6 shows under my belt, I have become a good judge of what is good, great, bad, or just plain ugly in the way of craft shows. Read up!

1. Timing.........if the show is too close to a holiday, people won't come and buy....because they already bought. If it is on a weekend of a holiday, people are getting ready to go out of town, or are already gone.
..........slow people traffic
2. Promotion ....Show organizers are going to make money whether the vendors do well or not. They have their money up front.......so I now know to ask what kind of promotion advertising the organizer will be doing.......and ask to see the printed materials and dates for those ads. New promoters will often think they can just pocket the money and not do anything to produce buyers at the show....News alert! If there are not many people there........the vendors will not participate a second time.
3. Types of vendors showing. If every other booth is offering the same as your product, you may have too much variation in product and it will just confuse the shopper. They cannot decide what they want when earrings are $25.00 at one booth, and $6.00 at the booth down the way....Shoppers often don't take the time to find out what the differences in the products may be.
4. Music........If there is entertainment at the bazaar.......it must appeal to a wide variety of people. The music should make the shoppers enjoy the experience, not make them want to flee the area.
5. Concessions........Vendors need a place to get a snack, drink, etc. Promoters who do not think of this, are not thinking of the vendors who are counting on them for comfort, traffic, etc. Vendors will feel unimportant..frustrated .i.e. you just wanted my booth fee, but did not want me to like your show.
6. Good Promoters make everything as easy for vendors as possible when checking in and out. They ask for feedback about the show...was it what you expected?...How can we improve? etc.

I love the opportunity to meet my potential customers at various shows...and I like it when I see repeat customers...It is like seeing an old friend! I also like visiting with the vendors who I have often met before at other shows. They are helpful and I am finding a vendor network who is willing to share other really good information with me....

Finding Inspirations Where You Are

Drive through the Botanic Gardens, or open a Catalogue....you may see something that is pure inspiration.
From a crafters mindset, it is always what could I do that would be in that feel, but with my orinality?
Recently, I have been fascinated with fibers and what I can do without actually sewing too much. So I have delved into the world of knit tops and tees. With a twist.

What I am enjoying is that with my creativity, I can enjoy a "look" at a price and offer it to my handmade addict mavens like me. It makes being "in style" fun and affordable........and you know, we will be on to the next idea next week.

By the way, speaking of other ideas....I can't say this idea was orginal to me or the many who also do this kind of experimentation....but look how cute this is! What a great day we had in Fort Worth at the Will Rogers Complex on Saturday. The Funky Finds Spring Fling show was hosted by FunkyFinds.com and Etsy Fort Worth and it was a big hit. I am not sure how many people came through the show, but it was a lot. There were groups of people constantly up and down the isles of booths and impossible to see from one end to the other for the people milling around and shopping at the neat....no...NEAT, artisan's displays.

I was a participant and had a great day of meeting people, showing my hobby/business (I am really a REALTOR, disguised as an artist.) and selling my work. Since I am a people person, meeting the people is the number one priority for me. I just love to visit and hear what they are doing, what they like and just intereact. I always learn so much and make several new friends.

You may want to know what I sold........Well...a little of this and a little of that........

This black with pink flowers tee was a big hit. And after I sold all of it, I took orders for black and also for white. I like either pink or white blossoms on the black one. And on the white, I like pink or black blossoms.

I also sold 4 pieces of jewelry to a Gallery that will be representing my jewelry designs. This is one of the pieces the Gallery selected. The others were pretty too. The Olive Tree Gallery in Keller will be showing this and other pieces in their new gallery which will open soon in Old Town Keller.

Of course.......I sold earrings which you can see at http://www.wantzit.etsy.com/ and soon on Funky Finds.com when I can get my shop opened.

My other good sellers were necklaces to layer one on the other and to mix to make the look you like. Since the trend is "mix it all up" and "the more the merrier"..........I have beautiful beadery that alone is conservative, but when you add something to it, it pops and is bold and fabulous.

That is enough about me...........the other shops at Spring Fling that I though were great were Bob Collett's woodturnnings..........He shows at Stanley Korshack and is a wonderful artisan. His website is

Funky Finds Spring Fling is in just 5 more Days! Ready Set...Setup!

What a great job Jessica and her staff at Funky Finds has done with organization and communication for the Funky Finds participants. The great advertising and cute cards for mailing have been great! Now if the weather holds, we should have a grand old time!

A preview of some of the artisans that you will see are SKETCH CUSTOM CLOTHING tees and just cute things with cute sayings....Very "now"!

Then there is Bob Collett, who is a Master Wood Turner....I did not know what that was until I saw what Bob does....He will be showing at Funky Finds...got in at the last minute and will be a quality addition to the show. His things are always available at Stanley Korshak, Dallas, in their Gift Salon.

The Team Fort Worth Etsy group will be sponsors of the event. I am a member, however, my real estate career has limited the time I have to spend....so I just create and try to promote what they do.

That Thing is Legendary!

The week in Fort Worth is the end of the world famous Stockshow and Rodeo. Just the name, Will Rogers Colliseum, conjures us images of cowboys, cows, horses, and of course little buckaroos. My creative mind, always at work decided to show you a few of my favorite cowboy items from around the country that Etsy artisans offer. Although here in Fort Worth, Where the West Begins", we think we are the only true cowboys, certainly, the other parts of cowboy US of A, deserve a look too.

This little cowgirl bow would be a cute look to get a future Dale Evans dressed in her cowgirl finery.

ETSY Team Fort Worth is Getting Ready for Spring Fling

Team Fort Worth is fast and furiously working to be ready for Funky Finds Spring Fling.
Most of the members work other jobs in the daytime.........and do what they love in creating at night. The evidence is clear..........there is a lot of talent in this group. As with any group, only a small percentage is active all the time, but all love ART and Creating.

Getting a treatsury is not easy! I have tried, but never have been successful, but some of these

I made several clutch purses and gave them as Christmas gifts....thus, I got rave reviews and decided to work with fabrics and do some Retro feeling handbags for Spring and use them on http://www.wantzit2.etsy.com/.

I must say that just a short time into the project, I am enjoying the experiment. Let me know what you think.

The fabrics are my inspiration and I totally go out of control when I get to a fabric store and see colors, textures, etc. that I like.

This little Messenger Bag has a pretty creamy yellow lining and a pocket inside to hold your
importants.

Going Retro or Vintage seems to be my constant inspiration. See what you think about Grandma's quilt that I have upcycled. I will be adding other styles from this quilt.............don't want to waste it!

This is a quilt more than 100 years old! It was all yellowed and looked beyond help........OxiClean to the rescue. It is white and it's delicate colors are just devine. I have added extra padding to be sure than my bags hold their shape.

The first 2 weeks of 2010 are almost over........resolutions are many, however we all know that the ones that we act on early are the ones that may survive. Since I am a REALTOR in my regular career, I have those resolutions and in my other life I am an artist and creator, I have two sets of resolutions! (My real estate blog is http://youwanttoliveindallasftworth.blogspot.com/ . Statistics say that shorter lists are better lists with more likely hood that some or most of the resolutions will be kept. So here ya go!

Here is THE LIST: (all caps to say I really intend to do it!)

1. Post more photos of me and mine on my blog...

Ok....that is done. And I will continue...because that is not all of my beautiful grandchildren.

I am a lucky grandmother and have lots of fun with my "kids".

I take advantage of time with each of them now while they are young, because they grown up all too fast!

Charles....always with a fun thing in his mind!

I have 2 more identical twins.....Caroline....delighted with a present.

2. Keep my workspace (creative den) neater and better organized!

Gotta get that done.....post hast! Someone must sneak in there and mess it up, because seems I clean it constantly.

3. Be more proactive in getting my creations noticed and maybe get a space in a store to sell things.

Why am I shy and hesitant to do this............confidence, confidence.........just do it!

Sub-goal: call or talk to one shopowner a week and find out how they work.

Nothing to be shy about.....this stuff is good!:)

Lots of new looks are coming for Spring...........which brings me to the next resolution!

4. ORGANIZE PROJECTS....Plan, gather materials for each and place in a location with all parts together...........then CREATE in an orderly way.

Last......goal........

5. Use a calendar and post the projects for the day they get done....DON'T DO TOO MUCH so that creating continues to be fun...........creativity cannot be forced, and should not be forced.

There are more resolutions that I could adopt, but probably would not be able to keep. There are more that I might decide along the road to add and I will update them if I need to. The point is that resolutions are only as good as what is possible to do..........I think I can do most of these! I will need to see if I can create the new habits to accomplish them. OK.......one...two...three...Here is to 2010! Cheers!

"Art is a Process, NOT a Product!".....We all need to remember this so that we keep that

fresh creativity that makes us and our "stuff" unique.

Happy New Year and First Year of Selling My Designs

It took a lot of confidence building before I actually put my designs out for people to see and purchase.
I knew they were pretty, but would anyone else think so too? I found out!!! Yes they do! And, I had a great successful beginning to my 2009 showing and selling.

First the earrings were simple and then I started doing new and different things!

Next I began playing with gemstone chunks and ribbons to design wearable fashion pieces that would work with the Fall 09 clothing designs...many new ideas sprung forth

These pretty faceted gemstones were just natural and lovely and people really enjoyed wearing them with sweaters and business attire........or jeans! I almost always sold the one I wanted to wear that day.........when a person would ask about it.

Then I began showing my headbands and fascinators at the various Holiday Art and Craft Bazaars around Tarrant County...These proved to be more popular than I would have dreamed!

The more simple ones were loved by just everyone....due to the Hollywood set wearing them in People Magazine etc. and the more ornate ones with the handmade roses that I designed are now in demand for parties and events. Each with a Vintage accent piece, they are in demand and have had a lot of fun working with my admirers to give them the glamour that they want.

As Christmas and the Holiday approached, I participated in a few small shows in downtown Fort Worth and discovered that I have new professional clients. I discovered that pieces like these (just above and right) were loved by professionals who wanted to spruce up a jacket with a little style.

And then the last show that I did in Sundance Square, the show organizer told me that she thought an emphasis on silver might be a good idea. So as a result, I created my Vintage Silver group and they have been great.

As 2009 has come to an end, my wish for all of us is a better world, better US economic conditions, appreciation of each other and just more Love for all. I hope that you will enjoy my blog and update of my creativity going forward into 2010. I will be doing more things in my sparetime from my real job of real estate.

First Holiday Bazaar was a Success...and I learned some Lessons!

Wow....I never dreamed that doing a bazaar/craft show could be so tiring! I found out what a novice I am with setting up, taking down, and all the while showing my "stuff" and visiting with browsers and fellow vendors. There is a lot to learn and I realize it must be done in stages.

My art was a success. People seemed to love my headbands and fascinators and my jewelry. I learned that not all people will like what I do, but I was able to "spot" my "people" often by watching what they did in adjoining booths. Mine is not the ordinary...........and I don't want it to be. LOTS of people took my cards, both the jewelry cards and my real estate cards. I hope I made multi-level friends.

This was the first day.........about mid afternoon when I was beginning to fade!

Sales were modest, but I made a profit the first day and that is when most of the sales happened for me.

The second day, it got off very slow....but there was also the re-set up to do and I rearranged the booth a little.

I am still working on the display which is difficult.

I was hard to make a gymnasium look good...and to be surrounded with all kinds of things from junk to food to clothing.

Fortunately, the shoppers don't seem to mind all of that.

The end result was that I made a little money and learned a whole lot of lessions....I will be better prepared for the next show that I do.

NOVEMBER ART SHOWS, BAZAARS, AND FUND RAISERS ARE KEEPING ME BUSY!

I like to be busy...the Fall brings lots of enthusiasm with cooler weather and holidays fast approaching.

*My primary business is real estate, but the heart of an artist must be fed, so by night I create!

FALL BRINGS FUN FESTIVALS AND NEW CREATIONS

FALL LEAVES ARE BEGINNING TO DROP IN TEXAS......AND THE FALL FESTIVALS ARE EVERYWHERE...........

Participation either as a vendor (designer) or as an attender (buyer) is lots of fun. I am participating as a vendor in 3 area Festivals as of today. I may jump in and do more, but as a "newby" to festivals, I am not quite sure what to do. I got my credit card merchant stuff and can not accept credit cards at the shows or at my home sales. I am working on my displays and how to set up an "inside" booth. Whew....there is a lot of work involved and if you (my blog public) have suggestions........let me know.

Upcoming shows that I will be attending: Oct. 14-17 2009, Sr. Citizens Arts Fair, Fort Worth Will Rogers Colleseum.........I will be showing in the Treasure Chest area.

CREATIVE WEEKEND LEADS TO FUN AND JUST MORE FUN

Being a perpetual creator....I am so glad that I have grandchildren who also love to create! Just this weekend, I had one of my Granddaughters here and we had a blast.........you must go to wantzit2.etsy.com to see the photo of what we did...Here is part of it.

This is a fascinator headband.........we (I) made a red one and sold it right away! Then my sweet girl said she would like one in blue...well, say no more....we had to do it!

The great thing is that this is really a sophistocated headband and looks just great on me, my daughter-in-law, or my granddaughters...............and of couse on you!

The part I love best is that I have a budding artist..........who may just follow my example and find lots of great enjoyment in creating and sharing.

Fall 2009 Brings lots of Excitement with Design and Art Shows

Fall Brings excitement and new energy to my Jewelry designs and my ideas are flowing...from early morning to late evening. I think the mix of accessories for Fall will be light mixed with heavy, open mixed with solids and lots of deeper colors....from metals to magical beads.

I also love the idea of heavy gold scrolls and heavier pearls with dark grays and earthtones. My days as a Designer ladies' retailer put my mind's eye in tune with juxtopositioning light, dark,light,heavy and other opposites to create interest. Look at Fall collections and you will see heavy chains and charms mixed with ribbons and sparkles..... I will be participating in several ART Shows in the DFW Metroplex this Fall...

Currently I will be at the Southwest Airlines Show on Nov. 23 at Love Field and am also scheduled for the Senior Citizen's Show and Sale in October at the Will Rogers Colluseum in Fort Worth...I will post more as I know the schedules.

I was at a Christmas in July show on July 24 and it was great! Lots of sales and compliments....and comments that I am priced too low! MARKETING YOURSELF & YOUR STUFF

The business of doing business is not easy for the small business. It takes lots of time, imagination, and thought to do it well. I don't want to be pushy or sound like a "broken record, but it is my job to somehow continue to keep my name in front of my public. I have most recently been "tweeting" and updating my Facebook, and My Space for developing a networking system. I hope that those are worthy ways of not being so much "in someone's Space" whiletrying to keep them in "my space(s)".

My real estate busines has some organizational ways that it is marketed.

First and foremost, to other agents all across the local areas, and then also across the Nation.

Locally the MLS and my Board of Realtors memberships keeps my listings showing to other

agents so that they can tell their clients about those listings. This is a professional to professional system and it is really good. In fact, if a homeowner wants to sell a home, it will sell much quicker than any other way and this can be proven statistically. In addition, it will sell for more money to the seller when sold this way. Lots of homeowners believe they will "pocket" the professional fees and save money...that is not correct according to the stats. FSBOs as they are known, sell for less, and the seller makes less. This is also true for Minimal service agencies who list for the owner at a flat fee. 90% of those either do not sell at all or they finally list with an agent who offers all services for the fees charged.

THIS NECKLACE IS FROM MY EXTREME BEADED COLLECTION AND WAS ACCEPTED IN A RECENT JEWELRY SHOW IN NEW ORLEANS.

It has a mix of Vintage pieces and seed beading designs and it is hanging on chain with multiple chain accents to give it the look of...well something that you want to see again and continue looking at.

Now....my challenge of how to market my jewelry is much more puzzleing to me.

Entering Jurored Art Shows is Scarey!

With creative urges sometimes taking over my life, I yearn to see what others think of my artwork. I do things that range from just putting some very nice stones and metals together to the WoW pieces...that can only be described as "You better not think you are Shy" pieces.

Those are the pieces that I find interesting to work on...as my art profs all said, the art is in the creative process, and not necessarily the result. But, people seem to like my results. So, with the encouragement of a fellow artist, I entered a show in New Orleans. I didn't know how long until I would hear whether they liked my "stuff" ...but, before the end of the day, I got an email telling me that all my things were nice, but my Art Pieces, "blew them away"! Wow...were they talking to me?

So...peruse my etsy shop and see what you think. I am considering the show, but the best part is knowing that I can if I want to!

Finding Other Artist is Part of the fun of being One!

I am a proud member of Etsy, Team Fort Worth and although it is a new Etsy team, it is full of talent and enthusiasm. I am so impressed with the knowledge and talent in this group and I am just a new member...as I said before. They know how to blog, post, network, and I hope they are going to teach me how to market my neat designs.

I also visited the Cattle Barn Flea Market last week and found some very talented people there too. The Cattle Barn Flea Market it turning into a much more "polished" venue than it was only a short time ago. The booths are taking on a "Little Specialty Shop" look and they are getting to be attractively arranged and it just looks like progress is happening. I still am sometimes amazed that some of the "oldies" will sit there with real junk...did I say junk...yes and price it as though it is going to be grabbed up immediately.....Don't get me wrong, some things are definitely nice and should be priced accordingly....but don't try to fool a veteran of shopper's annoynomous....I know! And, if I were sitting there, I would be encouraging offers....and some do.

Back...to who I have met: I met a lady that has a degree in metal smithing and she sells beading supplies and is going to make jewelry to sell in a magazine this Summer...She had lots of information to share. I love sharing knowledge and admiring the works of others.

I also met a lady who calls herself the FunkyGypsy, and she is extremely creative. She makes beautiful beaded (tiny beads) necklaces and also sells darling Children's Clothing. She travels and sells her things to stores and to individuals. I had lots of fun chatting and hope to see both of them again soon.

If you are an artist at heart...no matter the level of success, you usually see the neat sides of people and "things"....the creative mind is a miracle!

Now see what I did this week..........on by the way, My real job is REAL ESTATE....and I believe real estate is picking up!

If you know me, www.diannearnette.com ,or have seen my work at www.wantzit.etsy.com , then you know that I really like to create, whether it is marketing my real estate listings, my marketing mailings, or making jewelry in my spare time.

I feel watching most TV shows is a big time spender, so I try to "multi-task" while I watch a Dancing with the Stars or 24 episode. Last night, I didn't really have anything in mind, I just started creating....and oh la la, this is what I came out with. I could hardly put it down ....I stayed up much too late, and then this morning early, I posted all the photos to www.wantzit.etsy.com. It is COOL....I had fun doing it too.

Jewelry Design...Pleasurable Small Time Snippets

About me: I live in Fort Worth, Texas and it is a great place! We have world class museums, a world class rodeo and stockshow, and music performances with well known artist every night!....Besides that, For Worth, has me!

Did I always design jewelry? No....but I have always been an artist! I had a minor in Art in college, but being of practical mind....I got a major and a Master's Degree in different subject...so for the most part of my adult life, I have been the frustrated artist....A good painter...winning awards, leaving painting supplies out all the time are smelly, and messy, so I vowed and still do vow to do that another time, again, when I have the proper space.

Artist are always creative...and they usually can do a variety of things....not all of them are artsy! What is artsy, is the way the artist's mind works! Never at a loss for ideas and always able to think outside the box! Now that is a very good thing in any field....

So, in the daytime, I have been a Fort Worth REALTOR for many years. Most recently, in the night time, I am a jewelry designer. Those small snippets of time are so great! They clear my mind of the day's details or stresses, and I can see the progress and reap the reward each time I finish a design. Most recently, I have had requests for small wholesale orders and that is just great!
